They were the ones who helped out in their own special way. They helped with homework, finances, or showing additional special attention to you. They provided the sense of the clan which always surrounded you and was there to support you in tough times. Many of them had short tempers and equally spontaneous and wonderful senses of humor. They could get on laughing jags as much as anyone else.
